Do I need one? If so which one(s) should I look at? Do the non-enclosure type work well? What I'm wondering is if I need one for is to fill between 6.5" components and a 10' sub or not. Thanks for any input!!

If you do run a midbass midrange sub and tweeter you would need a 3way passive crossover from a 3 way comp set, or a 4way active crossover headunit like the ultra high end pioneers or a clarion drz9255 or an external processor like an audsion bitone. if its setup correcly it would sound better than a 2 way component set and sub but if you dont do it right it wont be worth the hassle and probably wouldnt sound as good.

Hmm so are we talking some serious coin?

you can always just get raw speakers from partsexpress and build passive crossovers to match them if youdont wanna spend the money on a 3 wasy comp set or a 4 way active head unit it just wont give you as much contol as a processor or active head unit. if building a set from scratch interests you go check out diymobileaudio.com. you can get some vry good advice and ideas.
