I added power steering to my Ranger. Went from V-belt to serpentine. Wanted to squeal. Had to shim the water pump pulley out 3/16" to get it into alignment. No more squeal.

I swapped the belt and the squeal disappeared. It's very disconcerting though, because I don't know what caused the belt to go bad in the first place! When the engine's running, the belt tracks as straight and true as the factory system, so what caused it to jump onto the power steering pump lip and thereby stretch?

The tensioner works well--the belt is nice and tight. The pulleys line up nicely, too. I'm really scratching my head over this because I need this machine to run reliably
 
Yesterday I carefully re-checked my pulley alignment. Apparently, my blower has either moved out of its original position, or I forgot to put spacers in where I needed them. I'll have to raise the front of the blower ever so slightly to get everything properly lined up.

Ugh! I'm back to one car again . . .
 
PS: It's the CMP = CaMshaft Position sensor SYNCHRONIZER (i.e. driver gear) that goes fatally bad--usually preceded by loud squealing--leaving your engine instantly OIL-STARVED, because the oil pump is driven by that same auxiliary shaft.

It is NOT the CPS = CRANKshaft Position Sensor you have to worry about... that's the geartooth thaaang behind the crankshaft pulley... it's pretty problem-free, and your PCM will definitely let you know if it goes DOWN.
 
ummm, a 93 2.3 does NOT have a camshaft position sensor on it... that's an auxiliary sprocket that drives the oil pump and nothing else. On the older models it also drove the distributor, but the silly distributor and TFI was done away with a few years before the 93 came out.

In 95 they added a completely different oil pump with a camshaft position sensor on it where the auxiliary sprocket is.
