Took my 87 Ranger to have it inspected and they failed me due to weak defrost. I admit the air coming out is pretty weak, and it does take forever to defrost it, til I used the rainx anti fog. Personally, I think the heat blows weak out of all the vents. I'm getting ready to replace the heater core because I smell coolant everytime I turn the heat on.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix the weak air problem. Additionally, how much of the dash has to be torn out to check the doors?

air coming out is weak? Sounds like your blower motor might be on it's way out. go get a new one. Replace heater core and all is good. The heater cores are really easy to change, as are the blower motors. Takes me around 30 minutes to do a heater core in a 1st gen.

Any ideas how to get the air box cover screws out. They are turning just not coming out, tried to grab with needle nose and pull up and turn with a rachet no success. Guess I could cut em and just zip tie the cover back on when I am done.

To replace the blower fan on a 87 you just need to pull the fan itself...the box doesn't have to come off the firewall...there should be 4 screws with hex heads that you can undo to pull the blower out...if they don't come off easily just be a bit careful and pry up on the blower slightly while turning them...that pulls them enough that they will catch the plastic and turn out...

I ran into the same problem when I removed the whole box to have the firewall sandblasted...and I didn't fasten them all back properly, but the box is held securely with the three or four screws that did work...I might look into other fastener options on it some day...

Sweet it was to cold today to really fool around, but maybe tomorrow I will tough it out, wifes gonna kill me for working on this thing to much lol.

Took out the blower today..on my model I have to remove the entire airbox. Anyway, vacuumed out a bunch of leaves. My question is, what's the easiest way to clean the vents that run along the top of the dash.
