Anybody have a degree in Mechatronics? Considering an AAS in Mechatronics since the VA is going to pay for it now that my hearing loss has been upped to 25% disability

I don't have the degree. But I've been doing that job since way before the term was invented. I usually call myself an Industrial maintenance technician. Here at BMW, my title is "Equipment Services Associate".

Anyway. If you enjoy mechanical/electrical machinery and have a good aptitude for computers and machine technologies, it's a great field. The pay can be good if you get with the right company. It's getting harder and harder to find people that want to do this work.

Check around, you might even be able to find a coop program to get into. They call it a tech scholar program here. The students work about 20hrs a week and go to school the rest of the week.

Oh. You're old. I claim my career beginning in 1982 in the Navy. Learning relay controls, logic gates, generators, motors and all the stuff that makes a nuclear submarine move under its own power. Things are a lot different now.

We see all kinds of people coming through the mechatronics program here. We just had one kid who is sharp. His dad works at a junk yard and brings home cars, motorcycles, parts, etc for him to tinker with. At 19 yrs old, he has already had almost half a dozen vehicles, including an 87 ranger and late 80's Bronco II. Got another kid that couldn't pick a grease gun out of a gang box. Asked him what his hobbies are and what he does in his spare time. He said he likes to sit around playing video games. And it goes down-hill from there. Not sure why he is in the program.

It was the only program that offered all the things I am interested in..... VA is picking up the tab. I think Boeing has a work study program through green river college.

Boeing should be a good company to get hooked up with.

Automation is the thing here.... forget software.... everything to do with manufacturing around here is automated

I've heard mixed things about bowing, but, yeah, automation. If you're thinking about getting into it, get an Arduino kit and see how you like it.

But the automation is controlled by software these days. The tech needs at least a basic handle on the computer side of it. Don't worry. The mechatronics degree will get you there. And then, sometimes a company will send you off for specialized training by an equipment manufacturer.

We do the "whole shebang". mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, electronic, computer, welding, rigging, basic machining, etc. The computers aren't just there to operate the machinery. They're often one of the most important troubleshooting tools.

I can already use a computer and can figure out how to use most software and have basic programming skills.... grant s, I need to learn more but I was referring to the software companies around here with over saturated employment IT and software design/programming ..... ie Microsoft

Yes. That is a different world. Being geographically separated from that industry, it isn't in the forefront for me.
