Hi folks - first posting to TheRangerStation.comTM - woo-hoo! What a great website and resource.

I have a '98 2.3 Ford Ranger XL - using it for home rebuild reno transport, etc. What a great truck:headbang:. Best truck I've ever had (erm, the only truck I've . . . - I should have bought it back in 1998 (I shouldn't have married my first wife too)).

Short story: Engine light orange, OBD II code is #1401 -or- "Differential Pressure Feedback Electronic Sensor circuit High Voltage." My very limited mechanical knowledge (i.e. Teh Google & TheRangerStation.comTM) indicates this is an ERG valve problem.

Any opinion, from a person(s) with advanced 1998 Ford Ranger mechanical insight & wisdom, as to how to help this hand-painted matte black automotive wonder, would be much appreciated.

G'day!

90% of the time, the DPFE is bad.
The other times it could be a bad connection, blocked EGR port in the intake, bad DPFE hoses (they are a special silicone, not run of the mill vacuum tubing, which will melt).

In your case, I'd do a couple voltage checks with the DPFE still connected (backprobe its wires) and goosing the throttle so the EGR valve opens.

If you're short on cash and can't stand the way it's running, disconnect the vacuum line that connects to and operates the EGR valve, plug it. Clear the code by disconnecting the battery and turning on the headlights, reconnect and drive till you fix it or the CEL returns. Should get a P0401 in that condition. Should run better though.
