Anyone know the fluid specification for the MD05? I know the manual says Mercon, but I'm looking for the actual Specification (e.g. XT-M5-QS, WSD-M2C200-C, etc)...

In your 94? Mercon ATF. Plain and simple.

Well the reason I ask is because if I wanted to use Royal Purple fluids for example, they have a spec chart to match up what product I would use:

http://www.royalpurple.com/transmission-chart.html

However I need the original specification, which I think might also mean part number. In that case Mercon is XT-2-QDX

Now I also find that Mercon is end of life and Mercon V is to be used instead:

And that spec/part number is XT-5-QM

I am running synthetic Merc. Calls for Merc. III, so any Merc III+ will work.

Merc V is NOT completely compatible with older M5OD 5-speeds, there have been numerous reports that it affects the shift quality negatively, and makes it harder to get into gear when at a stoplight.

Use the Mercon XT-2-QDX specification.

That might explain why it takes a sec for me to get it into first when its cold. But I am running 98+ internals with the updated syncros.:dunno:

0W-30 all the way for me. Been running it for almost 2 years now and only problem I have is a leak at the tailhousing. Not a direct result of running the motor oil.

That sounds crazy. My Ford Contour also had brass synchro's just like the M5OD and it was very sensitive to fluids. Many folks who used anything but the original specs eventually had serious problems, almost always with premature synchro wear. Thus the reason I was asking some very specific questions about fluid. After all I've read I will be sticking to Mercon and nothing else.

I have been using Royal Purple Syncromax in my transmission for the last 30,000 miles and got a slight improvement in shifting but nothing noticeable beyond that. I have not experienced any negative effects.

Me and a buddy looked at the Properties for the Mercron ATF that is to be used and we compared properties to different motor oils and the 0w-30 synthetic was the best match. In a gear box like the M5OD it's even better as it's a lubricating oil not a hydraulic fluid.

Go on Mobil1's web site and look it up for yourself.

How many miles have you put on your BII (BIV) since you started running the
0w-30? I am running synthetic Merc. now, but I feel like the syncros dont grab like they should, so it seems to shift hard.

I have heard the 98+ M50D's have a fiber lining in the syncros, but they looked the same as my 95 syncros when I had it apart:dunno: I am just worried that I wore my sycros wierd with the synthetic Merc. I want to change the fliud soon anyway since I have put 1000 miles on the trans since I built it. I want to make sure it is still red and not full of any shavings.
