Matched tires

So anyone experience mismatched tires on a 4x4? The brand and tread pattern is the same but the tread depth is different. Reason I'm asking is that had 1 tire replaced under warranty, should they not replace the other tire so there is a matched set on that axle? Even he said they should be within 3/32 of each other. Is this hard on the drive line?

Depends. What kind of differentials do you have? Open, not a problem. Limited Slip or a locker, the tires should be matched or things could wear or break. LSD is more picky than a locker.

Different traction characteristics of the tires, combined with locked or L/S differentials could maybe cause some kind of issue, I guess. I would think it really depends on what kind of driving you’re mostly doing. Daily on the road driving probably not a problem?

If it has ABS or all wheel drive the Ford spec for tire match is within 3/8" of the same circumference, that's a tiny difference in diameter.

another option that you have if the tire shop has the gear to do it is to have the new tire worn down to match the other three tires. This is sometimes done with awd cars that are in this situation.

Just inflate the worn ones a couple psi more.

Yes it is, if it reduces the circumference more than 3/8". I've seen it cause transfer cases to bind up and refuse to come out of 4x4 unless the truck backed up to relieve the driveline wind up.
