Last nite, local news, stupid reporter talking about the upcoming parades and get togethers at local VFW's for Vet's Day.
She's talking and talking, and then states "We are always glad to see everyone celebrate our serviceman from the 4 branches of military, Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines ". And she closed out her commentary.
Now, I was Navy, not a "Coastie", but I emailed her and let her know that she had done a dis-service the the 5th branch, Coast Guard, by not including them in her reporting.
She msg'd me back that she did not know the Guard was a military branch and she would have to "verify" it before she apologized.
I msg'd her back that I was contacting the station mgr, about getting rid of her stupid ass, which I did...still waiting for a response.
HAPPY B'DAY LEATHERNECKS !!! :yahoo:

To her credit, whether the USCG is really 'military' is up for all sorts of debate. Some legitimate, some purely inter service rivalry. They're DHS now as I recall. Weren't they DOT at one point?

I guess there is 6 now with the Space Force. It is amazing how many people forget or don’t know about the Coast Guard. I don’t. I make fun of them every chance I get!

I all seriousness, they are caught between a rock and a hard place. Police like force in peace time and all the crap associated with it and internal water ways in war time like Vietnam and all the crap associated with that. Nothing like being a sitting duck out in the open with not much of anywhere to go.

fastpakr, Shame on you...GG was formed in 1790 and had always been considered a military branch. They were there right along with the Navy in WW l and WW ll doing convoy duty as well as patrolling the continental shores, freeing up naval vessels and personal. They were formed to keep tabs on and fight smugglers, pirates, and to verify ships cargos, tariffs, and taxes.
They have fought in every war that USA has been in. They piloted the Higgins boats that landed troops in both theaters during WW ll, did thousands of rescues along our coasts during the war.
And now they go out in weather that has the rest of us boarding up our homes, to rescue and aid citizens. Drug interdiction is their big duty now.

They might have been. They answer to a civilian department in peace time and to the Navy in war.

From here: https://www.defense.gov/Our-Story/Our-Forces/

The Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard are the armed forces of the United States.
The Army National Guard and the Air National Guard are reserve components of their services and operate in part under state authority.

So there is no debate, she "F'ed up"

Yeah, they really pulled their weight in WWII.

There's a really cool Coast Guard Ship you can tour at Baltimore. That ship had a dog as a mascot and to make the tour more interactive, you search for particular parts of the ship where the dog used to like to hang out.

The dog was named dig?

If he was like every dog I every had he would hang out at the Galley near meal time, lol
Then sleep on the Bridge since someone was always there..........well hopefully :)

No question whatsoever that they've participated in armed conflict right alongside the rest in the past. Just pointing out that there is -some- justification for the confusion when they aren't a traditional DoD service.

Yes even the financial department had trouble during the shut down due to no budget. Emergency pay got approved for the military but they forgot about the CG that was in Transportation.

Let's make sure we remember them today, of all days, as members of the armed forces, and true veterans.
