hey guys i was thinking about useing a older manual transmission with a removeable bellhouseing behind a 2.3l 4cyl and i would like to know if the older transmissions will hold up to about 160hp tops , i am thinking i will get the model year i think 1989-1995 2.3l that comes with 90 hp from the factory and do a light porting job to it and upgrade the intake and some other things , i just would like to know if it will hold up to the added power before i go on the hunt for one , thanks

Honestly, Just to be sure, I'd try and get an M5OD that will match up...that way there is no doubt it will hold.

going to 4x4 the m5 is the best bet, but 4x4 m5od is not real easy to get.

i would use what you have if you cant locate a m5 for a good price.

Hes not going to a 4x4, at least thats not what I read. None of the 4 cylinder ever came with 4x4 as far as I know either.

Class: 2wd soon to be 4wd

well now you know:icon_thumby: 4 cyl 4x4 was common in the early years more then any others. all junk trannies though unfortunately...

They made 4cyl 4x4's through at least 1997.

And you ren't going to get any 160hp out of a 2.3 Lima engine normally
aspirted without an Esslinger head.

And it isn't Horsepower that limits a transmission, but rather torque.

Generally when you increase horsepower it involves porting, bigger cam etc... all those things do little to improve torque, what they do is enable the engine to amke the same torque at higher rpm...

if you relly want 160hp froma 2.3 use a 2.3turbo those make 160hp out of the box and can easily be tuned to 220plus with stock parts.

Not to mention that a 2.3 turbo is going to make 265-290ft/lb of torque without really trying (this is 5.0 territory.)

Several forum members have run ta 2.3turbo in front of a MAzda M5OD-R1.

These are the ONLY manual trans used in 2.3 Rangers 1988-up

yeah its going to be a 4x4 in the end , so far i have 4 options 1# is to take a v6 4wd m50d and adapt a 2.3 to it via a home made bellhouseing adapter , 2# is to try and find a 4wd 4cyl m50d transmission not likely , or 3# take the output shaft and tailhouseing off my v6 4wd transmission and put them in a 4cyl 2wd transmission the bad part of doing this is i will have to completely tear down both transmissions or , 4# find a 1983-1987 v6 4x4 mitsubishi or toyo koygo transmission and mount a 4cyl bellhouseing on it , by the way how hard should it be to tear down a m50d if i go route #3 , thanks

i read the faq in the force induction forum but it does't give any info on turboing a stock 2.3 or is it even possible to , also i know this will change from state to state but if i try to find a 2.3l turbo motor what should expect to pay for it and how does it hold up in price to puting a turbo on a stock 2.3 , thanks

if you have a 4x4 v6 m5 i suggest to have the parts along with some fresh bearings installed into a 2wd m5. then you know what you have:icon_thumby:..

though look around for a 4cyl m5 4x4, you never know what you will find till you dig around a bit. you might get lucky and get a nos unit for next to nothing.

allan pretty much lined it out for power, with good tuning you can get away with mild power with a stock 2.3, you need to limit boost and keep it off the lean side for fuel. 5-6 pounds will more then make a smiley face for the average guy. you want serious yet reliable power, you need money. not tons of money but it takes some smart shopping for good induction/head/headwork, tuning , forged internals.

yeah i think its the best option to swap the tailhouseing and output shaft from my v6 tranny to a 4cyl tranny , theres a guy in town that has a 1994 4cyl 4x4 ranger its all rotted out but runs good , i am going to see if he will sell it , he now has a chevy s10 so maybe i can buy the whole truck from him , i got a old junk 87 ranger parts truck from him last year so he may let me buy it , thanks

thanks for the offer but i think it will be way to much to ship it i am in vermont ,and i cant drive that far for it , on another note i called 2 junk yards today and they both can get me a 4x4 m50d 4cyl transmission but its going to be $600 for either so i think i willl keep looking for a whole parts truck , thanks
