I was just wondering what's the best and fastest way to Id a manual trans. I have a 87 2.9 4x4 and I not sure what trans I have. Plus I belive my syncros are going out any one now how hard they are to replace. Thanks

85-87 4x4 (any engine) can be EITHER a Toyo-Koygo 5sp (aka "T-K" or "Ranger-5")
OR it can be a Mitsubishi FM145 5sp manual (this trans is 4x4 ONLY)

T-K's are more likely to be found in 4cyl 4x4 Rangers, Bronco2's are more likely
to be Mitsubishi FM145's

from the tech library

I measured my trans from the front of the bell housing to the tip where it bolts to the trans case and it measured 26 7/8. Based on the TRS tech page none of the manuals trannys have that lenght. Any ideas which I may have.

I will venture a guess (and only a guess) that it is a T-K. Because it is less than an inch difference, that could easily be a measuring error, especially on your back, under a truck, measuring something not flat. If there is a tag that might help you, but my only other suggestion is to look at the pics and look at the shape of your trans vs. the pics in the tech library. Hopefully someone else will chime in about the syncros, as I have no idea.

Does it have a "pan"? FMs have pans and I dont think TKs did. It's probably a FM145.

The Fm145 has a pan made of sheet steel.

The TK-5 has a CAST aluminum bottom cover with fins.

The pan is kinda shaped like an H but without the connecting middle line. where the middle line would be is where the drain plug is at.

Yes, therefore a magnet will stick to the fm145 pan......

not great, its an oddball. its about 2" shorter than the a4ld, m5 or fm146 and its not the 'strongest' transmission out there. if you plan on leaving the truck relatively stock as far as driveline goes, its fine. if you plan on anything serious, swap in the mazda trans.

So when I put my 4.0 in I will have problems. I have a 91 sploder with a auto. What trans is it. Plus if I put the auto in my rear driveshaft will be to short right.

Exploder will have an A4LD. No if you put the auto in, your driveshaft will be too long.

that should be right, and the mitsu trans may hold up for a while if you baby it but the 4.0 is big enough the fm145 wont stay happy for too long...
