So me and the wife bought a ranger to help her learn how to drive a stick. It's a 92 2wd 2.3l. It had 80k on the odometer when we got it. I went over everything on the truck, all the fluids, hoses belts etc. and have been driving it for the last month. I put about 3,500 miles on it. I recently had to make a road trip to Maryland (about 400 miles round trip) so I figured the truck was broken in and ready for a long drive. I get down there and everything is fine, I turn around and start heading home and WHAM! The rear tires lock up and all of a sudden I'm skidding off the highway. I came to a stop almost in the shoulder so I throw the flashers on and look underneath. Everything is still attached but the balance ring is busted off the driveshaft. I get back into the truck and try to drive it off the road, it rolls about 10 feet and locks up. So I manage to get off the highway 10 or so feet at a time. My wife and buddy make a trip down with my tow rig and trailer, we pick up the ranger and tow it back to jersey. I pulled the trans today and this is what I found...

Now here's my problem. I can't find a trans local to me nor can I find a trans shop willing to rebuild it. I think I'm gonna try doing it myself. Is there a company selling kits or anyone tried this before?

EDIT: I just saw AllanD's Write up on how to dis-assemble the Mazda M5OD-R1 From what he said it doesn't seem that hard...

From what I can see 3rd and 5th have shed their teeth

I can pretty much tell you that 3rd failed first and the bits floating to
the back got picked up tby the lower spur gear for fifth and that
cause the upper gear to disintegrate.

The cluster gear is likely destroyed too

where about in Jersey are you?

I'm in south jersey 08043. I was cruising along in fifth when it locked up but having to nurse it off the highway probably didn't help matters. I was kinda hoping I could do this myself but after seeing this, I'm kinda scared:icon_surprised:

I'm in pennsylvania 20miles north of I-78

If you bring the trans here I can halp you with it.

I was able to take everything apart, clean it all up and lay it out. It doesn't look good. the shafts have blued and most of the bearings were really tight. I'm trying to find either a used trans or all the guts to go in this one.

I've got several complete sets of internal parts for a wide ratio 2.3 Mazda

Is this maybe something we could complete on a sunday or is it more than a day? It's starting to look like my only option is to rebuild what I got.

Yeah, a single sunday would do it

If I clean up my work bench before you get here.

You'll love my "organization" system...
(my place looked like the scene of an airliner crash but I've cleaned it up some...)

Sorry that your trip back home worked out so poorly. I rebuilt the mitsubishi transmission in The Deuce 2 years ago. I got all of the synchros, gears, bearings, and shafts from this place.

Really good people to work with, but you have to love the transmission, or at least the challenge of rebuilding it, to put that much money into fixing it. If you can find a 2WD version of the Mitsubishi transmission, I have had very good luck with them.
