Im thinking about going from manual to auto in my 85 ranger. I really dont know much about it. Its a 4x4. What all would be involved? What auto tranny should I go with? Thanks

Why?

Most of the autos that go into rangers just plain suck.

As to which one, it would depend on which engine you have, although a swap with a C4/C5 would make the most sense because they are a decent trans.

Whyyyyy?!?!

Auto sucks monkey balls!

Really, they do suck. And you would get even worse mpg with it. But I agree with Simple_serf, go with a C4 or a C5.

C4/C5 as mentioned, but you lose overdrive, they however are a much better trans than the garbage A4LDs which you'd have to be smoking crack to use, personally, I'd leave well enough alone. You'd need the flexplate, shifter/linkage, pedal assembly, and probably different driveshafts.

Going from manual to auto in a Ranger? I just cannot answer that one because the question itself is INSANE!

I think one day I'll buy a manual Ranger and convert it to an auto just to piss everyone off. I like A4LDs. ;brownbag;

The a4ld's from the 94 explorer are built much better than previous years, as they replaced several internal plastic components with metal.

I put one in my 96 manual 4x4 4.0, and have been running 5.13's and 37" beadlocks like I stole it for about a year, no problems.

DO IT TO IT. driveshafts are a direct bolt up, put your own flip switch for lock-up/ overdrive, and buy the b&m shifter kit. You will have to weld a small bracket foy the shifter linkage, and rob an explorer gas pedal, direct bolt up.

Everyone forgets about the ECU which controls when the thing shifts... You need a computer from the truck you get the tranny from.
