Fairly new to working on my own rig. just bought a 94 ranger that i was told the electronic 4x4 control box in the cab was bad. Drove the truck last night and when i turned it on this morning the 4x4 was engaged and now will not disengage. Luckily its stuck in 4 high so I was able to get it home but dont want to drive it around too much all the same. done some reading and am guessing its the motor connected to the t case which i plan on replacing but was wondering if i can just pull the 20w fuse in the bay to disengage the 4x4 until i can get together some money and time? Any other suggestions appreciated too. Thanks

Check the equipment on the T-case. My brother had a '89 Jeep that we found had a bad vacuum switch. Could be yours is similar to that. I'd say, for electrical issues, check your ground in the circuit too. Also, check the wiring itself--could be corroded so bad that it closed the circuit; check also the solenoid and make sure that it is also still working.

Hope this helps.

Remove the shift motor .you need to turn the shaft the motor connects to . The case is marked so you can tell when you are in 2wheel drive .

Do you known about the awesome Tech Library, here at TRS? Look for "Info-Technical" link up near the banner.

A common problem is the 4x4 shift motor, itself, tends to seize if it's not regularly exercised (once per month, or so). A cleaning can fix it. Yes, there is a control box in the cab, but replacing it seems quite rare.

No vacuum on his system.

Ash is right, you gotta take the motor off and flip it back by hand.
