I have a 2008 Ranger FX4. It has the electronic dash transfer case shifter that couples to a solenoid in the transfer case, which activates a physical lever to do the actual shifting from 2x to 4x4 hi and low.
It does not always disengage once put in 4x4. You have to drive around the block shifting from 4 to 2 to get it back in RWD. That can be a real problem, especially if you manage to get it into 4lo.
I've read many posts about how to pull the cover off the transfer plate, check and clean the contacts inside. It seems to be the primary point of failure, but it sounds like a real pain.
Since the actual transfer mechanism is a lever (just moved by the solenoid), does anyone know of an aftermarket kit to replace the electronics with a good old mechanical shift linkage so you can have a shifter in the cab (floor) and manually shift from rwd to 4x4?
I'm not 'un handy'. I just replaced the front hub assembly today without any problems, so willing to tackle something like this. HOWEVER, I don't want to engage in a DIY 'cut/hack/weld' type project. Hence the request for a complete aftermarket kit. (yea, I'd probably have to cut a hole in the floor, but that's OK if all the levers & trim are included).
Thanks.
