Making the ttb into passenger drop

I was looking at a thread on another site, the OP wants an expedition rig using a toyota truck as a base. One of the suggestions was to use the ttb front and flip it for passenger side drop as the OP has the running gear for that already. Those of you that have a lot more knowledge than me, and you know who you are, chime in please. Is this doable?

The way i see it is you have two options: 1. Hack up a pair of ford beams and graft them back together as a passenger side drop. It'd likely be more work than its worth and still require quite a bit of re-enforcement. 2. Scratch build a passenger drop ttb front end. Check out pirate there are a lot of guys scratch building 9" ttb front ends for koh and the like. In the long run i think it would be better than a rebuilt lefty, significantly stronger, and likely about the same amount of work. Might cost a shade more though.

I'm sure there are, but look at it from his pov. He already has a passenger drop case and axle that basically just needs cleaned up a bit. To run ttb he would have to buy a whole front end, fab the brackets to mount it, he'd have to buy the adapter for the case or a new case, or go through the effort of building a passenger drop ttb. If i were in his shoes i'd keep the case and the axle and drop the $60 into the axle to get it back together.

yeah, i'd just build a new pair of beams and use the 44 pig (or whatever TTB pig he has) treat it like a 9" 3rd member. i'd be afraid of a hacked up set of factory beams breaking out in the middle of bumf*ck.

but what would he gain from TTB? seriously? solid axles can ride smooth to ya know.. i think he's looking for to much work

i agree, it's just something custom that's going to take some fine tuning to get it to drive right as well as perform well offroad. aint my money or time that's building it though, so whatever floats his boat.

TTB is not in the books IMHO. Too much work to make it passenger drop.

for 1/2 that amount of fab he could get a JY solid axle and swap it on and be on the correct side....and have SA reliability for long trips.

I would not want to drive my TTB truck on long ass expeditions. Hell I'm tired of fighting the TTB steering quirkiness after 8 hrs of wheeling on a day trip. Hydro assist a SA with highsteer.....then you have the ultimate expedition front axle. Maybe I am just being whiny, but I don't get said frustrations after driving my dad's CJ-5, whether crawling or commuting.

You want ride quality of TTB? Air out your damn tires. Stop being lazy.

There are only so many twin traction beams left, its a shame to me when someone hacks one up, only to find out its booty fab and won't work and end up throwing it in the bin.

For sure! My SASed Ranger on 38's rode 10X better than when I had D44 ttb and 33s. I was shocked to say the least.
