In my haynes manual it say's I can use silicone sealant or RTV sealant on the diff cover? Is one better then the other, I went with the rtv sealant for $10 but there was also ultra rtv sealant for $15.
Any other tips for getting a proper seal

Regular RTV will work fine.

You can usually gets gaskets for around 10$ tho..

The front diff on my truck came from the factory with silicone!!!

it started leaking, I took cork/gasket sheet and hammered around the cover, replaced....... not a leak since.

RTV is fine if applied to a clean, dry, surface.

Okay I think thats the most important tip applying it to a clean dry surface especially considering how oily and messy the cover would be

When I did my rear diff I used a Felpro gasket and some gasket sealent. Probably overkill but haven't had a drop leak out.

My rear diff. cover has blue RTV on it and it hasnt leaked yet. Clean the surfaces with a degreaser. I use laquor thinner.

Yup, just make sure its oil free. Silicone won't stick to oil or old silicone for that matter.

If you get any get the harding stuff. The other stuff don't work very good. I've had bad luck with it.

they key is to apply an even bead all the way around the cover, then set it loosely on the diff with a few bolts and let it dry as a bead. then tighten

I'm pretty sure our Motorcraft Ultra Grey RTV sealant is made by permatex. Never had any problems with it. Lay a 1/4" bead all the way around the cover and tighten it down. Fill with oil and you're good to go. Never ever had a problem doing it that way, nor has anyone else I work with. Once it drys, you pretty much don't need the bolts, it takes quite a bit to get the cover back off.
