Currently I have an old aluminum canopy and I keep thinking about making a replacement. Has anybody made one and if yes do you have any advice?

Sorry bout that. I was thinking of a simple aluminum canopy
I was looking at my old ratty one and they look very simple
that said I haven't built anything like this before.

You need to define what the word "canopy" means in your terms... Is it a tonneau? Is it a topper? What?
