main seal questions

Does any one know the signs of a shot main seal? The other day my check engine light cam on and i felt heat coming from the trany hump in the cab. So i pop the hood and smoke starts coming out from the backside of the engine and front of the trany. I told my dad what was going on over the phone and he said the main seal but another guy told me that i need a new torque converter. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Which fluid is coming out?

thats the thing, its not leaking, my dad thinks that oil is some how getting into the torque converter but i dont know much about trucks and my dad is across state right now.

Main seals almost always slowly wear out. I've never seen or heard of one suddenly letting a lot a fluid out, and I can't imagine how it would trip the MIL light.


You more than likely have other problems.

hey is your tuck auto or std? if its a std sounds like a burnt up clutch

You more than likely have other problems.

Don't know about the light, but when the rear main went out on my Wagoneer, it dumped 4 quarts right out all at once. Silly me, I thought I could just put more oil in, so I did and spun a bearing about a block away, cause all the oil pumped out almost as fast as I put it in.
