I replaced my Mass Air Flow sensor in my 1994 4.0L OHV truck almost two years ago. I recently started having the same symptoms that caused me to change it, specifically: Intermittent stumbling and engine stalling when idling, intermittent bucking/hesitation or almost stalling at speed which cleared up immediately. In the worst episodes, the check engine light would come on, but 90% of the time not.
Wanting to see the difference with the MAF unplugged, I tried to unplug it while filling up with gas. But I could not get the latch loose without a screwdriver. Upon starting the truck, it was obvious the computer could no longer read the MAF and the CEL was on continuously. Mind you, it was still plugged into the harness enough to latch. But I had loosened it enough that it was no longer making good connection. When I got home, I seated the plug very securely onto the MAF and all the symptoms have gone away for a few days now.
So the point is, if having similar symptoms that are intermittent and clear up on their own - you might simply have an intermittent electrical connection to the MAF. Re-seat it, maybe even clean the contacts, and you might find your problem fixed.
