MAF question

Hi all, I'm new here but I'm hoping you can help. I recently acquired a 1990 2.3L (Manual trans) Ranger from a co-worker and I'm trying to get it through inspection. (NJ) I failed emissions for high NOX (only 201 ppm over the 1500 limit) I've noticed that the truck does not appear to have a Mass Air Flow sensor. I'm wondering if some Rangers during this year were not equipped with one, or if maybe a previous owner decided to remove it to avoid paying the price for a new one... Hope you can help :) thanks very much

Yes, the older rangers used the Speed Density mass airflow system, which means no MAF. I know my 87 uses this, hence no MAF sensor, but I am not sure when it changed over to a MAF system.

replace your cat and run some guaranteed to pass through it. should be good to go

a mass air system cannot run w/o a mass airflow sensor, your trk is speed density and has a manifold absolute pressure (map) sensor. my 92 has an maf on it, apparently the went mass air and not speed density in either 91 or early 92. id recommend having your cat looked at (or see if there is one at all) and have it checked again, if that doesnt help look into an oxygen sensor (if yours is equipped w/ one, unsure if your trk does).
