MAF mod interesting tidbit...(long!)

to make 325 hp w/ turbo load of .65 Brake Specific Fuel Consumption you need 44lb injectors, which the accel ones at summit racing are 64.95 a piece, 389.70 bux altogether. an N/A motor only has BSFC .45 and you could prob get away w/ 30 lb injectors but you cant produce 300 hp w/ an N/A 3.0/3.3 motor weve been over that so im going turbo. on an 8 cylinder motor all you would are 24 lb injectors to make 300 hp but you have 2 extra cylinders, i dont. im just looking for 300 horse and since i cant find 42 lb injectors for a decent price ill up them to 44 lb ones and have the capacity to produce a lil more power and just tune them down and increase my dwell/duration safety margin. the walbro 155lph fuel pump that will sustain 384 hp is 83.95, and i havent called on the maf yet and wont til i go to order it but somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 bux. im not sure if a fuel pressure regulator is needed but i will look into one, i found one for around 150 bux that has the vacuum input on it too. if i could get my hands on a larger fuel rail w/ adjustable regulator i would get one but none are available. you do not need to mod the pcm for high impedence injectors the pcm sends a high impedence signal. a race pcm or standalone uses low impedence signals so it needs low impedence injectors, you CANNOT put low impedence injectors on a stock ecu it will cause problems. since i will be using the megasquirt standalone ill be researching what impedence injector i will need and use the corresponding impedence injectors.

Ok ok u guys have mixed feelings about it but I just cut the lower part of my housing. The tail going from the tube to the housing and stuck a oil based air filter on it and I went from 14 mpg to 17+ . I did no other changes or different driving. Period.

Yep, my 2000 went from 18 to 20 mpg with a small but noticeable increase in power. No wait a minute, it couldn't have... the internet "experts" say that the mod can't possibly work. But then of course they've never actually done the mod for themselves, but instead rely on book learning as the basis for their expert opinions.

How sad it is that they spend their all time arguing theory instead of turning some wrenches now and then to find out what actually does and doesn't work in the real world. Such is the way of today's nternet advice givers.

Although I am no expert, nor am I ASE certified. Here is my 2 cents. LOGICALLY speaking, cutting out a section of your maf might increase the area in which air is traveling, thus increasing velocity etc but, it does not "inhale" MORE AIR into the engine. Only a larger bore would cause it to take in MORE AIR/FUEL. That being said If doing this is giving you "better" mpg MAYBE it is actually running the motor LEAN in which its not using as much fuel, thus a better MPG... (A lean A/F ratio will have a hotter burn. Heat decreases HP, heat wears down parts RAPIDLY and a lean motor has the potential to burn holes in pistons, break piston rings, scoring cylinders, heating parts to point of fracture, ultimately it could seize. Anyone who knows anything about a motor would know that running it lean is a BAD THING)
Maybe this cheap mod is saving you a few bucks at the pump but, I think in time it wont be worth it. Especially if you put your truck under a lot of stress it will be costing much more in repairs than you saved from that increase of 2mpg...

Here's some more grave digging. It was a pretty funny read though.
