I've got a P0171 and a P0174 code on my `03 4.0. What's the best way to clean the MAF?

With MAF cleaner.

Just spray the crap out of it. Don't ever touch the wires in the MAF with anything.

Also, check the rubber elbow on the right side of the throttle body for damage. I have been seeing a lot of 4.0s around that year with the hose split recently. That will be enough of a leak to set both banks lean.

It should also give you a bit of a stumble as you take off from a stop, but not always.

I really did lol at this.

2nd'd, also, don't use other cleaners on it if you've got them around. They can eat the varnish (or so I'm told) and cause other issues. Use MAF cleaner ONLY.

My friends Ranger still did this after a MAF cleaning, I'm going to have to mention that.

Would that be the left side(passenger side) if facing the front?

Left/Right of the vehicle are always given as if you are sitting in the driver's seat, so yes, passenger side.

A small guffaw came out of me as well.

While this is true, and everyone is responsible for their own actions and do their to their own discretion, I have used both carb cleaner and brake cleaner on my Rangers' MAFS successfully. No harm whatsoever.

Some carb and brake cleaners are better than others. A lot of the damage those do to MAFs is not about what they take away but what they leave behind when they don't evaporate completely.

Thanks for your advise on checking the elbow. I found what looked like two puncture holes(snake bite? :dunno:) so I wrapped it with some electrical tape. Also "sprayed the crap" out of the MAF sensor. Sure didn't notice the 4-10 RWHP that the CRC label stated. :) Rebooted the computer by disconnecting the neg. terminal and the CE light is out, hopefully for good.

Good job, and congrats.
