Can a guy use a 2wd M5R1 on a 4x4 truck?? What i mean is all you have to do is switch the tail housing from 2wd to the 4x4 housing??? is this correct or am i way off??? Im new at the mazda transmission. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

You need to pull the trans apart and swap in the 4x4 output shaft, not just bolt the extension housing on.

Ahh. Well i thought i had it all figured out. Damn..... Does anyone know where i can find a 4x4 m5r1 at a decent price?? going to look in classifieds on this website.. Thanks for the help

car-part.com or Craigslist.

If you have a 4x4 R1 and you're adventurous you can get a 2wd unit and swap the insides into your case and reuse you output shaft. Look for PlumCrazy's thread on the hybrid m50d.

That's the way I'm heading as I've found a very cheap 4cyl 2wd trans. I'll reuse my case, tailshaft, and output shaft. The rest will come from the other unit.
