As I cleaned up after my M5R1 rebuild, I found a ball and spring I don't remember taking out. I know I put the balls in the 5th gear sleeve and the speedometer gear. I suspect this came from the reverse shift fork looking at the diagrams? I can only guess it popped out when I moved stuff around. I've already bolted the trans back in the truck, but it's days away from use. Can anyone confirm that the reverse fork has a ball and spring in it somehow? What are their function? Any chance I can pop the tailshaft back off and put them in without pulling the trans back out?

I think they are 973 and 963 in this diagram: http://www.manualtransmissionpart.com/mm5/graphics/pdf/m5r2-2012.pdf

Answered part of my own question. Detent spring and ball, keeps it it gear. Now to figure out if I can put it back in without pulling the entire trans.

Do I need to just put the spring in the hole and push the ball in on top of it, or is there something else to it?

I did the same thing last time I had an M5OD apart. Yes you can get them in by just pulling the tail stock, no I do not remember the specifics. I think it involved loosening a bolt. I know it involved a pick.

I ended up taking t back out. Without a super long puller, I couldn't get the main shaft bearing off with it in the truck.

My advise on rebuilding an M5OD-R1 is if you for any reason remove the reverse shift fork from the rail it rides on you have "Screwed up"

Ditto for disturbing that big Torx nut that allows for adjusting the 5th/reverse shift pivot.

One of these days someone will show up volunteering to be a videographer so I can make a Mazda rebuild video and warn people what parts To "NOT pointlessly screw around with at the risk of committing a massive self-****ing exercise"

The best bet after you have the tail-shaft housing and the rear bearing off is to remove the single bolt in the side of the trans that holds the shift fork rail into the trans main case and pull the fork and shaft together.

If you never separate them you can never have problems getting them back together...
