At first I thought it was the rearend, except it whines almost all of the time when at highway speed. No whine in 4th. Well, there is, but totally different. Much quieter and more of a rear end whine.
The tranny is a 2004, behind a Duratec. It is from a junkyard, supposed to have about 50,000 miles on it now. It has been transplanted into a Sunbeam Alpine, so the noise insulation is minimal, which may be most of the problem. At present, I'm not especially concerned about the life of the tranny, just our ears as we take long trips in the car.
I'm looking for a way to quiet it down. The oil is synthetic Mercon V. Would a different type of oil be better? I'm not interested in additives. Oatmeal is especially frowned upon.
