This is something I have mulling over for awhile now especially with the continuing issues my C5 has been throwing at me lately on top of the perk of overdrive.

Trans, clutch pedal set, flywheel, pressure plate (with disc, TOB and PB), fullsize t-case and driveshafts to go with it are the obvious stuff I can probably figure out on my own. My engine is 50oz so the flywheel is a non-issue that way.

I would love to find an NP-205. Its heavy and old but it is small and tough.

What works for the slave/master, line and t-case linkage? Is the M5OD 164T? If so is there any difference betwen automatic and manual seperator plates? Starters?

Anyone have install pics of the easier to find 198?-1996 vs the 97-08 V6 M5OD?

It's not that bad of a swap. I don't have any pictures from the last one I did. You can use all stock ranger clutch hydraulics ( pedals, master and line). All the ones I did were the old style which isn't a big deal, cut the hole in the floor a little bigger and cut and weld the shifter. From what I do remember the engine plates between manual and autos are different. Anything recently I've always taken the plate. The starters are different between manual and auto...pretty sure it's 164t flywhel as well. The 205 is a good unit to have aside from the crappy 1.96:1 low range. It can be twin sticked practically for free. The next best choice is the NP208. It's a little bigger than the 205, lighter being chain drive but will still fit by trimming some tabs off and depending on engine placement you may have to barely shave a frame rail.

My truck does have a bodylift so maybe the shifter angle vs the floor would be better than a stock height truck. The shifter plate has another hunk of a plate trying to fill in the hole so I have kinda wondered what was up with that, the cab must have originally been a manual.

I don't think the low range is much of an issue, it isn't like I really do a ton of low speed crawling and the truck is geared fairly deep for its tires.

Is there any year of Ranger hydraulics that work better than others? I thought I have read that they did change the master cylinders over the years.

Any ranger that had an internal slave will work. From the FM145/146 trans and newer is fine. With the older style M5 the shifter will be way up at the front of that hole you have pictured. For 1st gear it will be in the dash. I cut an rewelded the bottom of the shifter or you can look for the newer style transmission which the shifter is closer to the stock location. If you use a stock shifter for a NP205 it will be a few inches to the left of your current one which will require some floor trimming as well.

How would an NP208 compare?

Here's my np208 behind my np435. I had cut just about through the shifter bottom and weld it back to clear the dash do that I could get it into 2wd.

I'm not 4wd yet. I have to get a new front driveshaft and make a new trans cross member. A body lift would have made fitting it up higher easier

Also I somehow got lucky and my Speedo cable length was perfect and it fit right in. My Speedo is back to being what it is to be, 4mph off instead of the 8mph of with the ranger transmission with my current tires. I had to use a f150 rear shaft and shorted it along with the use of a conversion ujoint for the rear flange, 1330 to 1310.
