im planning a transmission swap and i need some clarification. im taking out a fm145 (87 ranger 4wd) and putting in a mazda.

can i use any m5od from any 4.0L 4wd vehicle? (m5od-r1, m5od-r1hd or m5od-r4?)

i need to know what exactly needs to be done to the hydraulics. will the 87 master work with the newer slave?

can i use a front driveshaft from an 87 with an a4ld?

will a 1pc rear driveshaft fit right? (are the 7.5's and 8.8's different length??)

You can use the Mazda from a 4.0L, however the gearing is a little 'closer'. Meaning they don't wind out as much, but it will probably not even be noticeable, as it is not that significant.

The front driveshaft will work from a vehicle with a FM146, M5OD, or A4LD. If your lucky you could find a truck identical to yours, same bed and cab and just pull the driveshafts out of it.

I think the 1987's have an internal slave cylinder. If so, then the hydraulics should swap over.

the blue truck *was* an a4ld and i still have the original driveshafts :D

Sounds like all you need is a tranny.

You shouldn't have a hard time, looked as if you had a body life on the truck.

body lift? nope, 4" blocks in the back replacing the stockers, and 3" coils up front with high rider brackets. i do need to do a 1pc driveshaft though, i wanna lift it a little more

Did you check the u-joints to see if they were what was clicking?

Just thinking about it and thought I would toss that out there.

it makes the noise even when im sitting in the driveway, trans in neutral, clutch out... the only other thing it could be is something in the clutch maybe... it almost definitely seems to be input shaft related. just a good reason to do the swap :icon_thumby:
