Will a M5OD-R1HD bolt up to an 4.0 ohv in a 95 Ranger? I have heard that the r1HD will bolt up to a sohc and ohv, but I am not sure.

What exactly is the difference between the HD and the regular? They both have the same gearing and look about the same.

And can a M5OD-R1HD be found in every manual 97-2001 Exploder with a 4.0 sohc?

well, not a 1997-2000 because there simply are no manuals with the SOHC until the SOHC came in the Ranger.

What exactly is the difference?

Even I don't know because the THREE times I was supposed to get
one to examine the deal evaporated on me...

Most recently in july I was supposed to get one as part of a trade
The guy backed out at the very last minute.

so the only truck they can be found in, is any manual 2001+ sohc 4.0 ranger and I am assuming the B4000 also uses this transmission?

Trust me when I aquire one for examination (the last one had a busted
output shaft, but that wouldn't have mattered for my purposes) EVERYONE
will know about it....

Yeah, 4.0SOHC Rangers/B4000 '01-up

YES. All the 01+ HD's I've seen(and have owned) have all the holes needed for the OHV engine. Maurice put one in his '97 4.0. SOHC manuals bolt up to a OHV, but OHV manuals don't bolt up to a SOHC.

The bolt holes in question are the top passenger side hole. There's two holes there on the SOHC trans, but only use one and neither are a locating stud. On OHV's, there's only the one hole there.

I got pics showing the holes...just gotta find 'em.

AllanD....wanna buy a '06 M5od-R1hd 4x4 w/ approx 30k on it and a cracked output shaft? I happen to know this guy Fx4wannabe01 who has one sitting in his shop and he's in need of dough...

hello whats the difference between the two trannys whats so much better about the HD

Thats what the whole thread is about, but no one on TRS has had a chance to tear an HD down and compare. I just assumed that there is a reason they call it an HD.

They never made an M50d HD with a 2.3 bolt pattern, and they also never made a 4x2 HD.. The 88 and later 2.3 Rangers came with the regular M50d though. The 4.0 transmission is actually geared a little higher than the 3.0, 2.9, and 2.3 transmissions.

M50d gear ratios (1-5)
3.40 / 2.05 / 1.31 / 1.00 / 0.79 (4.0L Engines)
3.72 / 2.20 / 1.50 / 1.00 / 0.79 (All Other Engines)

I may pull the internals out of my 2.3 tranny and drop them into my 4.0 case.:thefinger:

Actually..... all 4.0L SOHC manuals got the HD trans...2wd OR 4wd.

There's a thread I've been looking for from a few years back giving the details of what the internal differences between the HD and non-HD models are. Thus far, this thread was all external differences, which are very very minimal. Internal differences if I recall have to do with syncros and shafts. But don't quote me.

And dang...I wish I had the lower ratios. Damnit....another trans rebuild. outch! Oh well. 4th and 5th being the same means the same highway performance which kicks ass as-is for me right now(4.0, 4.88's and almost bald 35's)

Found this, and it pretty much clears everything up. It looks like the HD actually has the same ratios as the regular old 4.0 r1, not as low as the 2.3/2.5, 2.9, or 3.0 trannies. So I think I am going to try and make a 4.0-2.3 M50d-r1 hybrid.:icon_twisted:

Is there any differences between a 4x2 and a 4x4 M50d other than the tail shaft and tail shaft housing? I can get my hands on a low mileage 4x2 a lot easier than a 4x4.
