M5OD-R1 vs M5OD-R2

I have a 2007 Ranger XLT 4x4 with the r1 manual, 4.0. Will the R2 fit or are they separate altogether?

The M5R2 will NOT work for your truck, period, end of story. They fit small block V8 pattern engines.

Does anyone know for absolute sure if the R1 and R2 internals are interchangeable or not? Lots of conflicting info on that.

No... they’re different. The cases are different sizes. They use different size bearings. Almost everything is different.

Sorry to revive a zombie thread, but...

I absolutely despise the tallness of the 3.40 1st gear in my m5odr1HD (I despise the reverse even more so, but I think I'm stuck with that) so I'm considering options to remedy.

It seems pretty plain from this thread that a R2 swap isn't feasible, and it would seem that parts interchangeability between the 2 is basically non-existent.

is the actual gearset from the non-HD weaker? I'd love to swap 1st-3rd if reasonable, but I don't want to leave myself more vulnerable to catastrophic failure. It is just a stock pushrod 4.0...

Swap to the 4cyl internals. 2wd trans are cheap at the yard

First and reverse are peeves of mine with the R2 FWIW.

Low range (2:1 for me) knocks both of them down to where I would like to have had them in high range. Right now my truck is backed into the garage and sitting in low range lol.

Swap in a toy trans and marlin crawlers...

Damn tractors will be jealous of it...

if the 3.9 R2 ratio bugs you imagine the 3.4 in the R1HD.

its not a huge difference, but at this point anything would help. Cold idle is like 15mph in this frigging thing!
