i have a broken 1997 4.0 M5OD-R1 4x4 and a rebuilt late 80s M5OD-R1 from a 4 cylinder 4x4, the casing is differant, when i purchased the rebuilt trans i didnt notice that the starter is on the opposite side of the casing, therefor my new rebuilt mazda trans wont work on my 4.0 V6 motor...what can i do, mind you im on a tight budget.. could i maybe pull the rebuilt internals from the rebuilt casing and place them into my 4.0 V6 casing.. or pay a proffesional to? i've gone through 5 speed tranns before but its not something i'd like to do again.

thanks stu

It is pretty easy to swap everything from one case to the other. I have taken the internals out of a 2.3 tranny into a 3.0 case.

The 2.3L/3.0L gear ratios are a little deeper for 1st, 2nd & 3rd gears, but the guts will swap over no problem provided your 4.0L case is good.
