Planning my 302 swap...it's a 2wd 85 Ranger w/ M5od.

Apparently the F150 M5r2 has the shifter more forward....will the top cover/shifter assy interchange for proper shifter location in a Ranger?

No, you can use a 1997 and up M5OD-R2 top plate I believe, shifter was moved farther back in 1997.

Or whole M5OD-R2 trans from a 1997 and up 4.2l V6, this V6 has same trans bolt pattern as 302/5.0l.

You can also make a custom bent shifter for older M5OD-R2 :)

97+ trans...this is good info.

Thanks!

The M5ODR2 shift plate for the F150 with a 5.0 is different than the 4.2 V6 plate. In the photo below the V6 plate(unknown year model) is on the left and the 5.0 from a 1994 F150 is on the right. I used the 5.0 and my shifter is as far forward as you can get and still have room to shift. You can't interchange the shift plates(in some model years?) because the shift forks are different widths and won't fit the grooves in the transmission.

Good info, thanks for the correct hands on data

Ford 4.2l V6 was first used in 1997, so above pic would be from 1997 or newer M5OD-R2.

In 1997, start of tenth generation F-150s, Ford switched to "modular" V8s so no more 302's(5.0l)
The modular V8's have a different trans bolt pattern so won't bolt to 302(5.0l)
The 4.2l V6 used the Windsor small block bolt pattern so it's trans will bolt to 302(5.0l)

1996 and older M5OD-R2 trans from a 302(5.0l) will have the shifter farther forward

So any 97+ 4.2 unit will have the shifter further back?
