I just replaced my clutch a couple weeks ago and subsequently decided to change the fluid after seeing how easy it would be and that it has 209,000 miles on it. the problem is, for some damn reason my chiltons manual stated 80w oil for a manual trans. reading around the inter-webs i see mercon ATF is whats recomended.

What gives? should i be draining the 80w and replacing with mercon ATF?
do i need to flush the 80w out somehow?

id swear the thing shifts a whole lot better with 80w in there, but the trans is a splash lube design if i'm not mistaken, so that's just not gonna work in the long run imagine.

Yes......drain the 80W. The tolerances in the transmission don't allow the 80W to get to the places it needs to be. Will cause premature trans failure, specifically at the pocket bearing on the main shaft.

Chilton is too generic, particularly on the Rangers where they have two books for the whole 30 years of production.

The early manuals did take 80W, the M5OD needs ATF.
