Hey all,
1992 Ranger 4x2 2.3L M5OD-R1 Tranny, no mods on truck (pretty plain)

My tranny basically seems to disentegrated on me, not sure what the problem is (if anyone cares, I was driving down the highway and it sort of made a clunk and lost lots of speed, with the rear wheels finally locking momentarily as I pulled off to the side of the road and came to a stop (turns out this was the clutch sticking from friction, as they broke loose after it cooled off, couldn't start the engine in this timeframe and the clutch had no pressure, all came back after a few mins.)
Now, when I start it, it stalls when I release the clutch no matter the gear position (even neutral), though it will roll in neutral but not in gear (like it should work, in other words). Any ideas?

Also, I'm in the process of removing the tranny. I have, in the past, helped someone else remove an A4LD from a '92 Explorer, and it was an ugly experience for the most part! Any tips on the removal of an M5OD-R1 from the 2.3L? Particularly, does anybody have any good methods for removing the top bolt and the driver's side bolt that attach the bell housing to the engine?

Thanks for your input
~Tim

I just did mine;
I used a short box end wrench, I laid across the engine from the right side, wiggled my hand back there, put the wrench on the nut by brail and while holding it, used my right hand to tap the wrench up with a 5 lb. sledge.
Seriously! Nothing else in my bag of tricks worked.
I also just had the experience of trying 3 devices to remove the old pilot bearing and finally busting it to pieces with said sledge and a sharp chisel.
Thanks FORD! I'm swapping my old tail cone and speedo gear to a newer
M50R1

Well you have a forward gear seized to the shaft. I have had that happen on a TK5 before. When you put the trans in a gear, you are actually then in two gears.
When you unbolt the trans crossmember, you can drop the trans down far enough that you can get to the bolts from underneath. You may have to drop some of the exhaust hangers, Maybe unbolt it behind the cat.
The clutch disconnect may give you some trouble but, don't get frustrated and cut the hose. The disconnect will come apart with a little patience.
The shifter has a built in puller for the handle, Take the nut off one side and put it on the other and tighten. The bolt will come right out and you can then pull the handle off.

Thanks!

Thanks for your help, both of ya. With your tips, didn't have too much trouble at all (except for fighting with that blasted clutch line disconnect!). Truck has been back on the road, problem free for many months now. Was able to save a ton of money by doing that myself (the tranny swap.) Thanks!

Most likely a melted input with heat conduction dammage to third causing it to bind on the shaft as well.

At this oint the trans is an oppertunity to test your skills as a photographer
(to take pictures of the carnage) and when you manage to disassemble the corpse of what was your trans a supply of moder art paperweights.
