So I finally got the transmission out of my truck and found that the noise was coming from the transmission and not a loose clutch or pressure plate. the noise happens every time i turn the shaft and in the same spot too. It happens in all gears and neutral. the sound sort of sounds like something is slightly out of place and tappes it against whatever. i'm not sure what it could be. any suggestions?:dntknw:

Sounds like a broken tooth in the input gear.

Time for a new transmission; I doubt the input (and cluster) are the only broken things in there.

Pull the cover and see what you find....thats the only way to know for sure.

Got it cleaned off and pulled the pan yesterday and it was a few broken teeth on the first gear on the input shaft.:yahoo: Nothing else was damaged by the loose teeth. :yahoo: I also have another 3 transmissions to select the parts i need.:headbang: all i have to do is pull the old one and put the new one in and get my truck back on the road err... i mean ice.:3gears:

Look VERY closely. A common newbie mistake is to ignore pitting. ANY pitting in gear tooth faces is a time-bomb. The contact patch on every tooth should be bright, shiny and polished, with fuzzy edges.

There is only one gear on the input. You mean the cluster? Then find out why it barfed. A spun front countershaft bearing would seem likely, in which case you probably need a new case, along with a set of selective shims and maybe a front bearing retainer.

nope the gears and bearings are fine.(exc. the one with broken teeth) The gear teeth boke when the black ice got the better of my truck then spun me backwards and the patch ended. The clutch was in but the truck stopped pretty fast.(i did have the brakes on too.) that is about when the noise started maybe a few days later. And all of the other teeth are worn with fuzzy edges even on the broken gear. I'll try and get some pics.
