ok im going to be going next week to pick up a M5OD at the junk yard. What all should i look for? and does it matter if it comes out of a 4x4 or not. im goign to be putting it in a 87 ranger with a 2.9 v6 4x4. thanks for the help!

The most common failure on that particular unit is being run dry. Check the fluid and see if it's full and if it is, check the color. I shouldn't be black or gritty at all. If that all pans out, put it in each gear and spin the output. Listen for grinding and grumbling, along with the smoothness of getting the shifted into each gear.

also grab the input shaft and move it up and down and check how much play it has. a small amount is acceptable but anything over 1/8th of an inch and its probably got a worn out input shaft bearing.

Also make sure it is from a 4x4 truck and that it was behind either a 2.9 or a 4.0 so that it will bolt to your engine.
