M5OD differences by year question

Working on an 88 Ranger with 2.3 and M5OD tranny 2WD, standard cab truck.

I am trying to figure out what year Tranny will actually work properly for my Girl friends truck. I made the mistake of looking at thig too simply and trusted the tech library that said that 4 cyl from '88 up had the same 5 speed tranny, but it isnt exactly true. Her truck is an '88 and the shift rail housing has a backuplight switch and a neutral switch (I believe), the tailshaft housing has the provisions for a speedometer gear. Well, I was not paying attention and bought an M5OD from a 2000 and now I had one that does not have either of these provisions.

I am now working on selling this tranny and finding another. I have been reading in this forum trying to figure out when the changes were made so I know what my year ranges I can work with are. Does anyone know when the spedometer gear was pulled out of the transmission or when the neutral switch went away? I guess I dont really need the neutral switch (if that is what that actually is), unless it does something I dont know about.

A little bit of help would be much appreciated.

Anything up thru '94 should have both the neutral switch and a speedo gear port, '95 thru '97 should have the speedo port, not sure on the NS. '98up I know will not have a speedo port.

Yeah they switched to OBD 2 and stated putting the speedometers in the rear axle with the ABS.

Any 88-94 ranger trasmissions should work. Whats wrong with the current transmission? the internals are basically the same for the M5OD so if all you need is an imput shaft or something you whould be able to swap it out.

The tranny that was in it.... digested itself... The case is even broken, the ailshaft housing is destroyed, and I am not sure on all the internals. So I am going whole replacement.

Thank you for the info on the year range guys... I'll see what I can track down for a replacement, and try to sell the one from the 2000.

Priest,

I think 1988-94 M5OD transmissions are the same. I bought a tranny out of a 1988 for my 94 Ranger but the frame on my truck had rusted away so bad on the right side frame rail I had to forget fixing the transmission problem. Does anyone know if the clutche for a 1994 Ranger 2.3L 2WD 5speed will fit a 1997 Ranger 2.3L 2WD 5 speed?

Thanks!
bill

Thanks... the clutch should fit... they didnt change in those years AFAIK. The one on her 88 is the same as the one that was on the 2000.

i have a 96 2.3 and the manual trans from a 88 fit no prob. i did change the speedo sensor from the 96 into the 88 and it plugged right in no prob.

I'm pretty sure the speedo gear and reluctor are swappable, as well as the speedo gear and electronic sensor. Just pull the tailshaft housings. As I remember correctly, I did this swap a few years ago. But memory is a strange thing.
