I just finished pulling the guts out of my m50d to clean all the aluminum shavings out them and inspect the gears. My question is, does any one have a good picture or diagram of where the two tiny ball bearings go? I found them stuck to the magnetic drain plug? One is larger than the other, so I am assuming they go in two seperate locations. I found an exploded veiw of the tranny, but it doesnt show any balls, and I cant for the life of me figure out where they go. I am pretty sure on was in the tailshaft assy, and the other was in the counter shaft assy. One is like 1/4 inch diameter and the other is more like 3/16 or so.

Purely a guess but I'm thinking maybe shift rail detents?

Are they the detent balls for the shift rails?
Should have springs behind them that make the shift rails "click" into gear.

I took the shift plate off in one piece, I never disassembled the shafts or anything, so if they are detent balls I dont know how they got out. I know they werent on the plug when I started, but after I pulled the tail shaft I found one ball, then when I pulled the counter shaft I saw the second one.

I found this exploded view, and it doesnt label any balls, but there are two little unlabeld dots in random places, there is one between 28 and 29, then there is one just above the counter shaft. I am thinking maybe those are the ones, but I dont where they go.

On a 2wd transmission there should be two balls, both the same size.

One is the "key" to locate the speedo drive worm gear.

the other goes on the countershaft to locate the hub that goes
inside the "float" bearing for 5th gear.

Its a 4x4. I found out that the larger ball is the detent ball for reverse/5th. But I am still looking for the little ones home.

Let me guess you actually took the 5th-rev fork off it's shaft?

Reassemble it onto it's shaft with the ball and spring, because the rev-5th shaft is NOT POSSIBLE to reinstall the way you apparrently disassembled it.

Like I said the little ball goes in a dimple in the cluster gear "Tail" where the inner sleeve for the 5th gear.

It is an anti-rotation "key" to keep that inner sleeve from rotating with the gear and
split-cage needle bearing instead of the cluster gear.
With the cluster gear in the case the "dimple" that that ball lives in
is right up against the rear countershaft bearing.

Thanks AllenD, I figured out where it went right before I came in and read your post.
