How hard is it to rebuild one of these? I bought a truck, the guy said it pops out of gear. I want it rebuilt, but I don't want to get ass deep into this tranny and then figure out it is beyond me.....

It's a fairly straight forward process, but is a bit time consuming. If you have basic wrenching skills you should be able to get it done. No special tools other than a way to pull/press bearings on. Find yourself a good clean space to work with enough room to spread everything out. Here is a link to a great thread on a rebuild, it helped me a few times when I had mine apart: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=248249

That was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thank you very much! Now, to find a good tranny shop, because there is no way in hell I am doing all that....I will end up with 4 reverse gears, one forward gear, and the 5th one will make me go sideways or something........

It really isn't too difficult. pull things out and leave them in the order they came out it. But if you can make a tranny that makes your truck go sideways.....theres some $$$ in that right there.

and the 5th one will make me go sideways or something........

I know a few people, who cant parallel park worth a damn, that could use that gear. :icon_thumby:

So...I brought the truck home today.....WOW!!! I knew the 4.0 was powerful, but damn....

Now the bad. The tranny shop guy says the noise it is making tells him the t-case is GONE. If you keep power applied to the trans, it runs perfect. When you let off, as in to slow down, it makes a grinding noise, slams around a little, thumps, bangs, and then you can't go. it's like the trans is disengaged from the engine. if you give it some gas, it will make more horrible noises, then slam, then you are connected again....

I had that same problem and i thought it was in the t case too but come to find out it was in the rear end i had ripped the spider gears out of the rear end of course thats what i get for pulling a 18' fiberglass double v hulled boat

so i would pop the rear cover off the rear end its quick and easy to check

I was gonna pull the tcase anyways.....and the noise is definitely coming from the t-case/tranny area.
