Ok so a little background info
93 ranger, 2wd, 5spd, 160k miles and runs like a charm. (Doesn't burn anything) The transmission on the other hand i guess was leaking oil. And i think its done for.

So i was driving down the turnpike to go to work and everything was going good. Then all of a sudden a loud noise came from the tranny. I go to pull her out of gear and she won't budge. So i gave a good solid yank and she pops out. I pull over and some smoke comes from the grill. I check everything out and nothing is hanging out, no fluid draining. So i figure i had a quater mile to get off. Lets see if i can limp it off the turnpike and call for a tow.I push the clutch in and fire it up. Go to try and put it in gear and it wont go into any gear. Guy pulls over, we talk. He ask if i wanted to get pulled to the exit. We hook the trucks up and procced to go. My truck is in neutral and starts jumping up and down. SO we scratch that. I car a buddy for a car dolly. Unbolt the drive shaft and tow it home. Got home now it goes in every gear? Im lost at this point. I hook up the driveshaft and put it in first and it doesn't move. But if i keep letting the clutch out she dies. Almost like the parking break is on still (but its not haha).

Advice is appreciated!!!!! Thanks

sorry for the novel, didnt want to leave anything out

You definately need to take the transmission out of the truck for starters. Sounds like you have it in 2 gears and that probably happened when you yanked it out of gear on the highway. Crawl under it and drain the oil out of it (if there is any). See what you got. When you get the transmission out you can take the top cover off and then you will see the damage/problem.

Ok so now im in the middle of pulling my transmission. Everything is disconnected, started pulling bolts and there are two that i can't get to. There on the driver side bout half way up. One is a little lower than the oil filter and the other is a little bit up from there. I'm used to bolts going from the tranmission into the engine block. But these two buggers go from the engine into the transmission. There in pretty tight places, cant really get to them let alone get a socket on them. There was another that went from the block to tranny, over by the starter. But there was enough room i could get to it.
Advice/Input?

Thanks everyone and explorin94

There may be some bolts holding an inspection plate in place. Keep at it you'll get it eventually.

Well she is out after a little time pretty much laying on my engine! Took the top of to find my input bearing and the first gear on it gone. Hopefully have it pulled apart by friday. And new parts ordered. Everything else looks good! Should i replace all the syncros while i'm there or let it be? I will post some pics also of the damage

Let's see some pictures first and go from there.

Now when i'm counting gears for ordering parts. Does it go 1st-5th in order or how is counted. What would you guys suggest i order as far as parts?

Thanks :icon_cheers:

It looks like that outer race might have spun it the housing. If thats the case, then it time for a new trans.

Id check it out carefully. You dont want to go wasting money only to find out thats its cheaper to replace it then to fix it.

Pocket bearing failed and took the input shaft bearing with it. You can rebuild that trans but you will need an input shaft, main shaft and bearing and seal kit. Probably upwards of $400 dollars for parts.

Well upon further inspection it looks like i found stress cracks in the case. So i'm in the neighborhood to buy a used or rebuilt one. Called every salvage yard in town and have been browsing craigslist but no luck. I did find this web site, was wondering if anyone has good or bad on them? http://www.smartpartsauto.com/manual_transmission_m5r1_mazda.html and from the picture. It looks like the starter is on the driver side and mine is on the passenger side.

It looks like the starter is on the driver side and mine is on the passenger side.

Then its for a v6, not the 4cyl. It wont work. unless its just a "stock" pic.

I actually have two 2.3 2wd transmissions setting around that will fit your truck. Tell me where you are located and I can give you a total cost shipped for one.

Lol, believe it or not that's the same guy that was stealing my pictures a while back for the same type of transmission. He's bad news, he tried telling someone that I was stealing HIS photos and I ended up having to file a dispute with ebay over it because he crossed the line when he did that. And not that I like to badmouth people or anything but if you look at his auction he states that the transmission he's selling is from a 93. In his one picture you can clearly see that it has an aluminum slave cylinder mounted in it still. In 93 they started using a plastic slave cylinder. Judging by his part number the transmission came out of a 1992 truck. Not that it matters or anything because they're basically the same transmission but I personally think that the guy is just on there pawning off junk and will say or do anything it takes to get rid of something.
