Hello All,
I have a 93 Ranger 4X4 and it has a M50D trans in it. Now I just spent a lot to completely rebuild my 4.0 and get bit more ponies out of it and I knew the trans was getting tired also and has a few issues with it so I am asking for any suggestions you may have as I am getting ready to do the surgery on it and make it new once again also. First - what I have already is a master rebuild kit
Front Input Main Bearing
Oil Baffel & Slinger at Front
Input Needle Thrust Bearing
Input Pocket Roller Bearing
Front Countershaft Bearing
Center Mainshaft Bearing
Center Countershaft Bearing
Rear Mainshaft Bearing
Rear Countershaft Bearing
Front Seal
Rear Seal
Steel Top Cover Rear Plugs
New Top Cover Seal
Transfer Adaper Gasket
Speedo Cable O-Ring
Two Shifter Seat Bushings
Complete Synchronizer Ring set

Now the issues - the trans has a squealing bearing when I disengage the clutch and try to shift it into gear, I figure this one will be resolved by the new bearings included in the rebuild kit. It also has a tendency to pop out of fourth or grind going in. That is where I am looking for suggestions as I am not sure if the replacing of the syncros will be all I need to remedy this situation. So I am looking for advice and suggestions as to what you may think and if there is anything else you can suggest I may need parts wise, or need to do so I know I have the issue resolved.

Thanks for any input you have in advance !!

The squeal when clutch pedal is in is the throw-out bearing attached to clutch slave, it has failed.
Need to get a new slave

Popping out of gear could be the Shift fork for 3rd/4th getting worn out
read here: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74270

Transmission spins at the same speed as the rear wheels, so if rear wheels are stopped then output shaft of the trans is at 0 RPMs
If the clutch pedal is down and shifter is in gear, any gear, then trans input shaft, all gears and output shaft, so whole trans, are all at 0 RPMs if rear wheels are at 0 RPMs.
So any noise at that time could only come from bell housing area or the engine, assuming it is running :)

That is my thoughts also Ron. Just so you know the throw out and slave along with the clutch were replaced when I did the engine, about 2000 miles ago. Can you just replace the throw out bearing without replacing the slave cylinder ?????

I'm researching parts for our 95 explorer. Check Rock Auto for just the throw out bearing. We have the M5OD-R1 (I'm updating the removal of that beast on my other post...what a PITA) The part shows can be purchased apart from the slave.

If the slave and bearing where both replaced as a 'set' with only 2000 on it? Take 'em back and get them warrantied for replacement. They should jolly well last longer then 2k miles.

Thing is I started collecting parts for the engine rebuild early last year, a few pieces at a time and the clutch kit was one of the first batch of parts that were purchased. The kit came with a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty which has long expired so I am basically screwed in returning it !!!

The throwout bearing can be replaced separately... most of the clutch kits I've put in come with a throwout bearing, as do the slave cylinders...the bearing clips onto the slave.

Synchros are not going to fix the popping out of gear issue, Ron is right about possible worn shift forks. Could also be the shifter bushing! Worn synchros will cause a grinding noise between gear shifts...their purpose is to keep the next gear spinning at the appropriate speed during a shift. It takes a LONG time to wear them out.
