So I have decided to do the swap on my ranger. I have a 92 4x4 with a dead A4LD and a 4.0. It has an E locker in the rear and a track lock up front. 4.56 gears. Tires are 33s. My transfer case is manual shift.

I am a biggame guide and spend most of my time on logging roads with an occasional "situation".

I am leaning towards a M50-R1. I would like to go with the the lower geared transmission.

Just for clarification I want to make sure I ask the right question when I call the salvage yard.

I am looking for a M50-R1 from a 88-92 ford range with a 2.9. Correct?

Will a 10 inch clutch be compatable?

Any feedback on brand of slave cylinder, clutch kit?

Thanks, Don

when i did the swap. I honestly don't see how a 10 inch clutch would fit. But someone who has done this can shine it in on.

Is there any way to tell if the transmission has the lower gear ratio if it is already out of the truck?

Any 2.3, 2.9, 3.0 that is bolted to a m5od should have the lower gear ratio. Only the 4.0
m50d is different. If you cannot find any of thoughs trans but find a 4.0 one I'm willing to swap you for the guts. I've got 8 more m5od's that I have not split open yet. I am willing to swap if you want part for part and we only pay for shipping. You can keep your 5th & reverse gears because it is an improved setup.

That was my next question. Can I swap the lower gears from a early M50 into a late model 4.0 M50?

You need to swap the flywheel also.

It's M5OD-R1. (OD = OverDrive)

Yes, the 2.9L M5OD would be the one to look for. The 4WD ones are somewhat rare though... I do believe they only came in a few 1990 trucks (most others will be Mitsubishi FM146s).

If you can't find one, then like was said, the entire guts from any non-4.0L M5OD can be swapped into a 4.0L case no problem to make the equivalent of the above 2.9L version.

Yes, 10" 4.0L clutch fits inside the bell no problem (I have the 4.0L clutch on my 2.9 M5OD).

Hope that helps

Is LuK the preferred clutch or would you go with a 3 stage?
