ok so im gettin ready to put my 8.8 out of an exploder in the 84 ranger i got. it will be used fairly hard off road (runnin 80 + across whoops, jumping and so on) how well will a lunchbox locker hold up in this rear end? anyone had problems with them?

From what I've heard people have rarely had problems with them. I'll let others answer from their experience though.

If you have the extra money, a detroit would be stronger.

Never had any problem, but I never went 80 on jumps before. What do people with those trucks use? Lockright is fine for the average midwestern truck--forests, swamps and some rocks. Maybe a spool is best for that highspeed stuff because then the rear will never be unpredictable. A Lockright or Detroit can be squirrely--unlocking and relocking and herking and jerking. At 80mph and a floppy suspension you might not want that. Or it's the best thing there is. But I would run whatever those guys typically use.

Edit: Look around here maybe

ask anyone on dezertrangers. they will tell you hell no and most likely tell you to get a detroit locker in it. ive never heard of a lunchbox locker in a pre-runner.

yeah well most of the guys on there can be real dicks no offense. tehy like to say their opinon and not state the facts whether they are right or wrong. no offense to you if you ron there, thats why i stated MOST not ALL ya know.
so why not? a detroit is still a locker, jsut the lunchbox one does not replace teh whole carrier.

the unlocking and lockin off road doesnt really do like you think. with as mcuh give there is in dirt you cant really tell when its unlocking and locking. im just lookin to see if the lunchbox is strong enough to take some punishment. i know it may not be as strong as a detroit but i cant see where this locker would fail. i guess i should have asked who has had one fail and what broke to i can put that info into what i do and compare.

i have passed the limits of the 8.8 myself.

in your application fully trussed and welded, with a girdle, and real full case locker you will be at the pinnicle of capacity.

which you need at 80 mph in whoops.

the weak spot of the 8.8 is the carrier and spiders. and the drop ins do fail quite often. in a myriad of ways from too cold of lube to pin failure from case deflection. axle shaft snappage blows the side gears in half too after a few times.

case deflection kept killin my 8.8 arb,s so i went to full float 60.

I know PatoV6 is running a lunchbox just fine in his 28 spline 8.8 on 37s. Carrier failures do happen but I've only heard of a few. If your application doesn't see much street I'd weld it.

hmmm, i see but isnt an ARB a whole carrier also? How much torque do you have on that bad boy lol. the housing will be fully trussed and made desert ready i had already planned that :icon_welder:, just was unsure about these lunchbox lockers and carriers. from what i can gather i think i will jsut try it, no one else has seemed to have done it yet this thread is kinda new lol. if it blows then it blows and ill just rebuild it. Now remember this only a play truck so it would NOT be abused for 1000 miles at a time, only maybe 50 to 100 miles at most on weekends and some street time.

i would weld the rear gears up but i want it to be semi streetable and having a full spool on street can be no fun at time. The way i see it now is that it cant hurt to put one in cause if it goes out then it goes out, ill only rebuild it stronger ya know. atleast i tried it :D

i would go with what they said about welding the rear. been running a welded rear for over 2 years now in the rocks, sand, water, mud, and yes i do jump mine around 45 mph and dont have any issues with the rear other than the typical axle seal or bearing replacement

i think patov6 went to a real axle as well:D

welded on a daily driver with 35 in tires is a no no. nothing like locking it up at 80 mph..with 31's its hard to hurt an 8.8. so run small tires on the street and the bigger tires when you need em..

well ill be doin the lunchbox locker with 33" tires on it. i dont want to weld it up as it willbe used as a DD for about a year or so since diesel cost way too much for me to be runnin my rig around town, then turned into a full race truck. the way i see it is if it breaks then oh well, il just rebuild it unless it broke too much (like the case lol) then it just gives me a good excuse to save for a currie 9" :D
