lugnuts not staying tight

hi everyone

on thursday i got new wheels. my stock ones were 15x7 and these are 15x8. ever since i put the new ones on, my lugnuts havnt been staying tight. i can feel a vibration whenever they are starting to loosen. does anybody have any ideas on how to keep them tight?

Are you using the correct lugnut style for the wheels you just installed.

Especially if the new wheels are the thin steel type, your lug nuts may be bottoming out on the caps.
 
You should be re torquing them after a few miles instead of just tightening once. Torque em down, drive about 20 miles, do it again. After about twice it should stop unless as has been suggested your studs are bottoming out in the nuts.

+1 on this good info. torque them properly (with a torque wrench) and retorque them again after a short trip (i think they say 50 miles)

i always leave my torque wrench in my car or truck and retorque my lug nuts after i get to work (about 30 miles)

You are tightening them in a criss-cross pattern?

BTW sounds like you just need to clean the threads really good, get all the grease and oil off the threads, use some permanent loctite, and tourque her down!!!

...then sell the vehicle! :idiot:

I suggest Loctite 2760 High Strength Threadlocker...

Agree with everything there except the loctite. That will make it a real PITA next time you want to take the wheel off. Use a torque wrench and torque down to around 100 ft./lbs. and check the torque after a couple days or 50 miles. Shouldn't have a problem.

I use red locktite on my rear wheel spacers and it's not a factor in removing the lugnuts that hold the spacers on.

My front left lugnuts (aluminum wheel) come loose when I am plowing snow. I retighten that wheel a lot in the winter. I think the 500# plow hanging out over the front with the wheel squirming back and forth under heavy loading does it.
 
If they are aluminum, there re sometimes clips left on the studs to hold the rotors or drums on during assembly, aftermarket aluminum wheels usually arnt counter sunk on the back side to go over those. It will slightly hold the wheels off the hub causing them to loosen and vibrate. Just remove them if thats the problem. If they are steelies, just do as someone else mentions and re-tourqe them a couple times. You have to where the paint off of where the lugnuts seat. I work at Leschwabs and we see the clip thing alot when other stores leave them on. hope this helps.
