lug nut style

i have 91 ranger and i bought a set of lug nuts for stock wheels. i bought the 1/2 20 thread lug nuts. the flare that buts up to the rims was not as big as the stock ones. the side of the nut (that the socket graps) was touching the rim. so i went back to the parts store and another guy told me they wont work, but an hour before that one guy said they would. so what does anyone think.
