LS1 Ranger

Sometimes a lightweight car or truck will be quicker with a smaller cubic inch engine with less stroke simply because it doesn't overpower the tires and they usally rev quicker due to less mass at the crank.

Here's the dimensions of an LQ4 (6.0L) truck engine.

5.3-6.0 can be fitted fairly easily, i have worked with them in a few off road applications(jeep f/s gm). admittedly working with oem harness/powertrain was not easy, but there are nice aftermarket setups now that get you rolling for @ 500 or so. if you get a low mile powertrain from radiator to drive shaft for 1500 that 500 for the aftermarket harness is money well spent.

in the overall, your just not gonna pick up and drop in any oem ford smallblock someone has laying around with low miles into a ranger thats going to beat a l/s for performance and cost economy.

i know i cant build a 302 that matches it in my particular application and swap it into a ranger.

its a swap forum. so most guys are on a budget. in this regard and in 2009 the ls is at the TOP of my list of cost effective swaps.

I agree, I wish my Camaro was an LS, instead of the LT1... I like the way the LS cars sound sooo much better... Plus, with ported heads, and a cam you can easily get into the 400+ RWHP range...

add efi live tuning and i bet you can get to 500 easily. i can hook you up with a bad ass LS series tuner if your around indiana..

I have an LT1, and I hadn't planned on responding to this thread because I was sick of fighting over the internet (I remember a joke saying arguing over the internet was like racing in the special olympics)... I'm afraid my Camaro will have to go in order to pay for a tow rig... They are IMHO the only choice for a high performance domestic vehicle, unless you want to spring the extra $$$ for the 'Vette...

yeah, theres an unlimited amount of aftermarket for the LS motors. and if anyone here knows a thing or two about EFI LIVE tuning software, then you know what a LS motor could be capable, even in stock form. i have a chevy duramax diesel pickup and have it EFI LIVE tuned. the motor is completelty stock,..stock turbo, injectors, bottom end, etc. all i have is a bigger fuel pump, stage 4 trans. 4 in. ex. and cold air intake. i dynod it at 532hp and 1025ft. lbs. and i run a best of 13.67 in a 1/4 mi. in a 7663 lb. truck. and remember this is a tune only. practicaly stock truck.

I hate you for finding this deal. When are you going to start the swap? I am gathering everything up for myself so I can do the swap on BOTH my trucks.

just ran into this topic, funny I'm fixin to start a 5.3 BII Its goin buggy style and I can tell u from measuring the ls has some width/heith issues. All workable since theres so much change that can be done. I got my engine from a 02 silverado for 600 inc the harnes comp and all acc. Had the comp and harness dun for 500. Now I have 5 wires to hook up and it will run-ign hot, bat +, fuel pump wire, tach wire, and ground. I actually cranked it on a engine stand and ran perfect. so I basicly have the complete engine ready to bolt in for 900. Not bad for aluminum heads and seq fuel injection-spos to be around 320 hp. got a d60 and d70 for axles and th350 203-205 doubler. Maybe soon I can get started. I'll deff be postin on the buildup-

lol i didnt even know this thread was here, the shop i work for all we do is ls swaps from mustangs to caprice's and jeeps, my mustang is on the chopping block as we speak getting a 6.0 lq4 turbo build, also is my friends 00 mustang 5.3 turbo build, so i would be willing to help with any questions, also for the post i saw with a ls6 intake, headers, cam and a good tune we have seen many 400+ cars with that set up IMO ls is the best bang for the buck

Well, I bought that truck for $500, sold the tranny and case for $700 and the 6.0L (iron head) for $700. I now have an 03' 4.8L that is as complete as it gets, right to the heater hoses for $450.

The lesser torque and higher revving ability was ideal for the NV3500 I had planned on using but then a NV4500/NP241 fell in my lap for another $450, so I'm still doing the 4.8L but I'm on the hunt for a 6.0L block to build a stroker out of...... :icon_hornsup:
