how can i tell if my truck has a ls in the rear? the tag has rusted to pieces before i bought it

check the door. Should be an axle code on a sticker. if it starts with a D, you have an L/S. Now, that doesn't mean its any good, they are clutch-based and could be blown by now.

To actually test if it still works, jack up one tire with the truck in neutral. When you turn the tire, both the drive shaft and the other tire should try to spin with a L/S.

Wrong.

If it starts with an R he has a L/S. D shouldn't be on the tag at all.. he drives a Ranger.

Now if it was an Explorer or BII you would be right.

Best way is to pull the rear cover and have a look inside (there's always the possibility the axle could be swapped), but that's a little more work.

Both "R" and "F" codes are possible on a Ranger w/limited slip ("R" = 8.8", "F" = 7.5")
