Low pressure intank pump....

87 Ranger 2wd/5sp/2.9.

Spent all morning trying to get the fuel canisiter off the frame...finally did. What a bitch. No filter inside.

But...after i pulled the fuel lines off the can and removed it, i put a drain pan under the lines coming off the tank and turned on the key.

No fuel came out.

Guessing that means atleast part of my problem is the intank pump? How does it even run without it? Is the frame pump stout enough to suck it up?

As long as the line is primed the high pressure pump will work....as long as it is primed. On my race truck I used an aftermarket in line low pressure pump plumbed as close to the tank [aftermarket fuel cell] as I could get. It feeds the high pressure pump.

So...it would be possible for the truck to run even with a failed in tank pump?

I heard nothing inside the tank and no fuel from the line off the tank when i turned the key on.

Yes - it can run without the in tank pump. I certainly wouldn't expect it to run correctly, though. If nothing else, the high pressure pump is having to work a lot harder than it should.

Which would explain why i only got about 6 weeks out of the first frame pump i put on it.

There is fuel in the tank? Blow air in the line and listen for bubbles.

Yes theres fuel in it. I just put 3 or 4 gallons in it the other day when it ran out. Ill check to make sure but there damn should be.

my 88 2.9 would run for a while, then die. sit a while and it would fire right up. run a while, then die 5 miles later. or 3 blocks from the house.
thought it was the TFI so i remounted it on a heatsink.
still had the same problem. turned out to be the intank pump was getting hot and not pumping. when it cooled down it worked fine.
new in-tank pump cured the problem
