I recently acquired this truck from my father who had parked it 4 years ago because it wasn't running right. It has very low power from a stand still. It's slow to get to speed but once it's up to speed it runs well. A couple of weeks ago after doing some diagnostic test driving at night, I noticed that the header was glowing red. I thought there must be some type of exhaust blockage. I removed the catalytic converter and installed a test pipe. The header still glows on a half mile test drive. :dunno:

-Checked for vacuum leaks by spraying ether around intake tract.

-Checked timing:
28*-30* with spout connected
10* without spout

-fuel pressure 38 lbs. @ idle @ schrader valve

-no CEL (it does work)

-Compression tested motor:
Cyl. 1 - 150 PSI
Cyl. 2 - 160 PSI
Cyl. 3 - 160 PSI
Cyl. 4 - 160 PSI
all held PSI for approx. 20-30 minutes

-I drove the truck without the spout connector thinking that this might be timing related but it was still sluggish and the header still was glowing.

-I ran a diagnostic EEC check which result in all good! More specifically:
KOEO
111
111
1
111
111

KOER
111
111

Recently done:
rebuilt transmission (2005)
new fuel pump
new fuel filter
new fuel pressure regulator
new air filter
new O2 sensor
new ect sensor
new PCV
installed a "test pipe" in place of the catalytic converter
changed oil
fresh gas
Seafoamed fuel

I know this is getting long but I want to be as thorough as possible in giving all the background information I can think of. At this point, I feel I'm over thinking this problem. I'm quite sure that this is something very simple but I'm too close to see it. I'm hoping some fresh minds might be able to put me on the right track. Any ideas on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your time!

i would check the cam timing.

schmoo, I think you might be on to something! :) I checked the cam timing. When the mark on the crankshaft is aligned with the T.C. notch the camshaft mark is one tooth past the upper timing pointer. I pulled the front accessories off to change the timing belt. I will finish installing the new timing belt in the morning. It's pretty cold out there!

Hello Forum!

I'd like to thank schmoo for his suggestion.

I found what I believe to be the problem. They say a picture is worth a thousand words so I'll just show the damage. I don't even know what the proper name of this part is. Could someone please tell me what this part is called? The lower serpentine belt pulley bolts on to it. It has the crank position sensor triggers on the back.

and the damage:

The crank key wore into the part and made its own key way!

that'll do it...

that's the crank pulley hub I guess, probably easiest to find used, I have a spare but it's in just about as bad of shape :)

thanks for reporting back.

I have a complete engine (cracked block) in my garage on the floor. It's a '95 2.3L. If you can't find the part locally, and if a 95 part will fit your 94, then you can have mine.

That right there is mighty fine of you. I would accept that offer but I don't think the parts interchange. I will check with a parts store tonight.
I tried calling a couple of salvage yards on Saturday with no luck. I will weld this one tonight and see what happens.

Thanks
