Ive been workin on a 86 Ranger and it is acting really cold blooded. You start it and you have to constantly work the gas pedal. After about ten minutes of working the pedal it will idle for awile then the rpms drop to about 400 and starts to die. Once it starts dieing and you rev it up it will idle for a little longer then start to die off again. I took the fuel tank off and tested the lift pump but that worked fine. The next thing I am going to do is replace the main fuel pump. I have an after market pump in now. I tested the fuel pressure and it was about 35 I think and from what the stats on this website say is it should be around 40 psi. If anyone has a suggestion on another fix I am open to any suggestions.

The truck is an 86 Ranger 5 spd 4x4. Its got the 2.9L V-6.

35 is in spec. Was the fuel pressure tested while the engine was running? Might be worth while to check for diagnostic codes - see technicaly library under EEC-IV diagnostics.

The only problem with that is I don't have access to the equipment to check the codes. And yes the fuel pressure was tested when it was running.

I think I could russel up a paper clip from somewhere. How would I check the codes. I thought you had to have a special computer to do that. I feel stupid right now. Another thing. I only have about an hour a day to work on this. I am taking an automotive class and my instructor is giving this to me as an extra project.
