Loud Thumping noise!

That would be more like a lifter issue. My dad's 91 with the 2.9 does that. After you let it sit for awhile, the lifters will make noise for a bit when you start it up.

ticking if its very fast injectors, slower and/or goes away probally lifters

if its a thump im not sure but my crown vic and now my ranger both do(did) it. think its the blend door bouncing around.... seems to happen when i shut it off as well...

My truck occasionally makes a loud thump noise when the A/C compressor kicks in. Some days it does it and I can actually feel it in the steering wheel, most days I would wonder if it still works(pump runs with the defrost on as well). But I have the SOHC 4.0... dont know if the pumps are the same.

not part of the A/C system. EVAPorative emissions.

the hose that runs from the engine to the EVAP canister should have a purge valve somewhere.

if thats the source of the thumping its normal
